Directed by Shaw Brothers icon, Cheh Chang, this outing is broken into three sections -- part takes place in Heaven, part on earth, and the final section is in Hell. The film is a combination of fantasy, romance, musical, and fantasy/horror. The final section is the best -- where several spirits who were supposed to go to heaven accidentally wind up in hell. Although the hopping vampire (or gyonshi) is a Chinese legend, Japan was the biggest market for these stories. In the mid 1980s, Taiwan produced a series of gyonshi films (such as, Hello Dracula) and a TV series for the Japanese. These followed the adventures of an elderly Taoist priest, his granddaughter and youthful male disciples. Each film also featured baby gyonshi, adult vampires and other demons. This DVD combines three episodes (#'s 1-3) of the rare TV series. (NS) |

This off-the-wall production has so much going on, it's hard to keep track of everything. There's an evil master harvesting souls, green-haired ghosts, gyonsi parents trying to raise their vampire kids, an assortment of other demons/monsters, plus two of the greatest Asian female action stars of the era -- the adorable Lin Hsiao Lam and the incredible Yukari Oshima -- actually, Yukari pretty adorable too. |
