Life and Death of El Santo
Q-1.5

Please see description to the right, for specifics of the image quality

This is a rare collection of documentary films about the Life and Death of El Santo. There are 6 sections in all, the fist four deal exclusively with el Enmascarado de Plata.

PART ONE is a 48 minute Santo documentary featuring numerous old film clips and interviews with five people: Lorena Velazquez, Carlos Suarez, Hijo del Santo, Leopoldo Meraz and Carlos Monsivais. This program is hosted by Jaime Almeida. It concludes with a discussion of the notorious TV show where Santo removes his mask and shows images from his funeral.

PART TWO is a 9 minute documentary with a female narrator. It features film clips and has some great behind-the-scenes footage of Santo. It shows him in his dressing room before a match and relaxing at home -- doing things like playing the piano, praying and playing handball.

PART THREE is a 9 minute Santo interview on the CINE AL DIA TV program. This shows Santo in talk show panel format -- talking about his career in the ring. The video quality of this third section is not great and parts of this section are very jumpy, but the sound is fine.

PART FOUR is an incredible 15 minute piece on the death of Santo. It features interviews of his friends and family including: Wolf Ruvinskis, Alfredo Solares, Huracan Ramirez, Hijo del Santo and Hector Guzman. There are many film clips and scenes from his wrestling matches. There is the famous clip showing Santo removing his mask on TV. There are photos of Guzman as a young man, before he became Santo. And there is incredible footage concerning his death, including an image of Santo inside his casket and a shot of the casket being placed in its permanent tomb. This section ends with a telephone interview with Santo's longtime friend and manager, Carlos Suarez.

PART FIVE is a 7 minute segment on the Lucha Libre Idols of Today. This section has short pieces covering many Mexican wrestling stars including: Hijo del Santo, Canek, Ray Mendoza, Perro Aguayo, Villano and Tinieblas -- with his alien sidekick Alushe.

PART SIX is a music video by Sergio Arau. This video is an homage to Mexican wrestlers and it features lots of masks and other Lucha Libre related images.

This entire tape runs approximately 95 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE: The video quality of this film varies from section to section ... but there are some video problems throughout. There is some jumpiness/distortion of the picture which occurs off and on throughout much of the tape. At times the picture is clear, at times the distortion runs just along the top of the screen, but at othere times the distortion occurs over the entire screen. The extent of the problem varies. At times it is fairly minor, but at other times, it is pretty bad. Overall, the film is generally watchable and the sound is good, but this is not a mint film. Most segments range from Q-1.5 to Q-2.5 -- but part 3 is quite poor.

Mexican Monsters on the March (199?)
Q-2

Interesting tape includes sections of eleven different horror/sci-fi films including: La Loba, Nave de los Monstruos, Aventura al Centro de la Tierra, Baron del Terror, Charro de las Calaveras and six others. All dialog scenes are removed from these films, leaving only the special effects. So in effect, this tape is approximately 2 hours of great, non-stop monster scenes -- from some of the classic Mexi-horror films.

Santo's Final TV Appearance + Bonus Wrestling Match (1983) $20
Q-2

A panel -- including Santo, Blue Demon & Wolf Ruvinskis -- debates if wrestling is theater or sport. On this notorious TV show, Santo actually showed his face on camera. There is also bonus coverage of a wrestling tournament honoring Santo, featuring El Hijo del Santo. This program will be recorded on a 160 tape. (The price for this tape is $20.)

Viva Santo and Friends (199?)
Q-2

Another fun tape by the folks who brought you Mexican Monsters on the March. This tape includes sections of numerous "Lucha Libre" films, including many films starring Santo, Blue Demon and others. All dialog scenes are removed from these films, leaving only the opening credits and the wrestling scenes. So in effect, this tape is approximately 2 hours of non-stop wrestling action.

Vivir en la Lucha Libre (+ Super Barrio bonus)
Q-4

This documentary film covers the history of Lucha Libre in Mexico. The film features many vintage film clips, showing many famous wrestlers in action. There are also numerous interviews including: Wolf Ruvinskis, Huracan Ramirez, Tinieblas, Ray Mendoza, Mil Mascaras, Blue Demon and female wrestler - Lola Gonzalez. There is also a section on Santo, showing him working out with Hijo del Santo and featuring images of his funeral. The program also discusses relevant politics, including a short segment on masked political activist, El Super Barrio. This program is 43 minutes long.

As a bonus, there is an addition 15 minute program showing a public access TV show featuring El Super Barrio. The show was very cheaply produced, but fascinating. It is a political message from the real-life masked hero, who talks about the unfair treatment of his people and the corruption of the Mexican government. He also discusses Chiapas and revolution. Interspersed are clips of him walking among the Mexican people. The Super Barrio portion of the tape has English subtitles and the quality of this section is Q-2.

72 minute Japanese documentary film has lots of 'ring action' plus interviews and background info on some of the major stars of Mexican wrestling (including Hijo del Santo, Villano, Rayo de Jalisco and Black Shadow).
