All films are available in DVD format only. The price for DVDs is $20 each, plus shipping. We offer a special: if you purchase 5 DVDs, you get a sixth DVD for free (so 6 DVDs are $100). You can Mix-and-Match Asian and Mexican films for this discount. The shipping charge (within the USA only) is $5 per order, no matter how many DVDs you purchase. We are always striving to upgrade our copies of these films, so that we may provide our customers with the best copy of each film that is available. (Some films may have originally been recorded off TV and may contain commercials -- but these are indicated within the listings.) We have not viewed all films on our listings, so there may be an undetected minor flaw (such as commercials or some mild digital break-up). If you find such a flaw, please let us know, so that we can rectify the problem and/or update our listings. All films are recorded on a name-brand DVD-R. Movies come in a plastic slim-line case, with generic, B&W artwork. All titles are currently in stock. Life and Death of El Santo (1990s)

Lucha Libre

This is a rare collection of documentary films about the Life and Death of El Santo. There are 6 sections in all, the first four deal exclusively with el Enmascarado de Plata. This entire program runs approximately 95 minutes.

PART ONE is a 48 minute Santo documentary featuring numerous old film clips and interviews with five people: Lorena Velazquez, Carlos Suarez, Hijo del Santo, Leopoldo Meraz and Carlos Monsivais. This program is hosted by Jaime Almeida. It concludes with a discussion of the notorious TV show where Santo removes his mask and shows images from his funeral.

PART TWO is a 9 minute documentary with a female narrator. It features film clips and has some great behind-the-scenes footage of Santo. It shows him in his dressing room before a match and relaxing at home -- doing things like playing the piano, praying and playing handball.

PART THREE is a 9 minute Santo interview on the CINE AL DIA TV program. This shows Santo in talk show panel format -- talking about his career in the ring. The video quality of this third section is not great and parts of this section are very jumpy, but the sound is fine.

PART FOUR is an incredible 15 minute piece on the death of Santo. It features interviews of his friends and family including: Wolf Ruvinskis, Alfredo Solares, Huracan Ramirez, Hijo del Santo and Hector Guzman. There are many film clips and scenes from his wrestling matches. There is the famous clip showing Santo removing his mask on TV. There are photos of Guzman as a young man, before he became El Santo. And there is incredible footage concerning his death, including an image of Santo inside his casket and a shot of the casket being placed in its permanent tomb. This section ends with a telephone interview with Santo's longtime friend and manager, Carlos Suarez.

PART FIVE is a 7 minute segment on the Lucha Libre Idols of Today. This section has short pieces covering many Mexican wrestling stars including: Hijo del Santo, Canek, Ray Mendoza, Perro Aguayo, Villano and Tinieblas -- with his alien sidekick Alushe.

PART SIX is a music video by Sergio Arau. This video is an homage to Mexican wrestlers and it features lots of masks and other Lucha Libre related images.

PLEASE NOTE: The video quality of this film varies from section to section ... but there are some video problems throughout. There is some jumpiness/distortion of the picture which occurs off and on throughout much of the tape. At times the picture is clear, at times the distortion runs just along the top of the screen, but at other times the distortion occurs over the entire screen. The extent of the problems vary. At times they are fairly minor, but at other times, it is pretty bad. Overall, the film is generally watchable and the sound is good, but this is NOT a crisp film. Most segments range from Q-1.5 to Q-2+ -- but part 3 is quite poor.

We want to thank David Wilt for his kind help in writing many of the film descriptions listed on these pages. Without his indispensable book, 'The Mexican Filmography' (McFarland, 2004), the task of writing descriptions of all these films would have been almost impossible. We paraphrased his reviews for most of the synopsis we used for the films. If you don't yet have a copy of Dave's book, there will soon be a new paperback edition -- likely released toward the end of 2010.
